AMREF Flying Doctors

AMREF Flying Doctors – Emergency Medical Evacuation Service

When you're out on safari in East Africa, it’s natural to wonder what would happen in a medical emergency. That’s where AMREF Flying Doctors come in. For just $35 per person for 30 days, you get access to emergency air evacuation services across Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi. It’s peace of mind for your entire trip.

What Is It?

Flying Doctors is a 24/7 emergency air ambulance service. If something serious happens while you're in a remote area — like a snake bite, an injury, or a sudden illness — a team of medical professionals can fly in and take you to a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, or the nearest proper medical facility.

When You Might Need It

Imagine you're in the Serengeti and twist your ankle badly or get sick. Flying Doctors will quickly assess the situation and, if needed, arrange a plane or helicopter to get you help fast. They also provide expert medical advice over the phone if it’s not an emergency.

Important to Know

  • Only emergency evacuation and medical transport are included.
  • Treatment at the hospital and any visa fees (if you're flown into Kenya) are not covered.
  • It does not replace travel or health insurance. You still need full travel insurance to cover things like medical bills, trip cancellation, or lost luggage.
  • Mount Kilimanjaro evacuations are possible (by helicopter, depending on the situation), but Mount Meru is not covered. Make sure your insurance includes mountain rescue if you plan to climb.

Why It’s Worth It

Safari is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, but you’ll be far from city hospitals. Having Flying Doctors on call means you're covered if something serious happens. Since 1957, they’ve been helping travelers stay safe while enjoying the wild side of Africa.

We’re happy to arrange Flying Doctors cover for you when you book your safari.

Travel & Cancellation Insurance – What You Need to Know

We require all guests to have proper travel insurance before your trip. This should include:

  • Medical coverage
  • Emergency evacuation (including mountain rescue if climbing)
  • Lost or damaged baggage
  • Trip interruptions or delays

We also recommend cancellation insurance in case something unexpected forces you to cancel. Depending on the policy, only part of the cost may be refunded, especially for longer trips. Please check your coverage carefully.
